Community Outreach

SJP partners with community-based organizations and legal organizations to provide access to education for court-involved students with disabilities.

OUR PARTNERSHIPS

  • Service Sharing & Access

Additionally, SJP partners with organizations to do service sharing and access. For example, SJP has partnerships with the following organizations:

World Central Kitchen (WCK): We are partnering with World Central Kitchen’s WCK Direct program, which provides direct meals to individuals who are struggling with food insecurity due to COVID-19. We have partnered with them to be able to enroll our clients directly in the program so that they can receive meals from local restaurants.

Open City Advocates (OCA): SJP has a Memorandum of Agreement with Open City Advocates (OCA) that enables both organizations to refer clients for supports from each organization.

Free Minds Book Club & Writing Workshop: SJP partners with Free Minds to provide their members with access to special education lawyers and our clients with workforce development and empowerment programming.

  • Partnerships with Legal Organizations

SJP partners with other legal organizations and firms to provide services to its clients. Current partnerships include:

Terris, Pravlik & Millian, LLP (TPM) & Washington Lawyers’ Committee: We are working with the Committee and TPM, a public interest law firm on litigation to ensure that incarcerated students are receiving access to education. We recently filed a class action lawsuit in federal district court on behalf of students with disabilities in DC jail who had not received education during the pandemic.

  • Other Partnerships

AlixPartners: Since 2014, we have been partnering with AlixPartners for both fundraising/development and metrics.

AlixPartners has hosted and funded our Annual Fundraiser each year. Recently AlixPartners got involved in skill-based volunteering with SJP.

We have been fortunate to work with our contacts there to develop a metrics/data tracking system, and we are continuing to develop and expand our partnership.

  • Education Legal Clinics

One way we partner is through our Education Legal Clinic model, where we provide on-site special education attorneys at locations throughout the District to assist students with their education needs, such as school resources or transcript reviews. The legal clinics are aimed to address brief legal service needs of students.

Update: Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, SJP has temporarily suspended the legal clinic. We hope to resume the clinic in the near future. Please contact us if your organization is interested in hosting a legal clinic.
