SJP Provides Keynote Address to U.S. Department of Education

In May 2023, SJP’s Director of Programs & Co-Founder, Sarah Comeau, gave a keynote presentation at the annual NDTAC Conference at the US Department of Education. NDTAC is the National Evaluation and Technical Assistance Center for the Education of Children and Youth Who are Neglected, Delinquent or At-Risk. In collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education, NDTAC provides technical assistance and support to all States receiving Title 1, Part D funding. As a part of this assistance, they host an annual conference to support States in their program implementation and to encourage structural changes that incorporate the priorities of youth and families.

Sarah shared best practices and solutions for common problems in correctional education, specifically focused on maintaining quality education through periods of incarceration. She discussed the role of LEAs in maintaining quality education, best practices for education continuity and credit accrual, and family access issues in a post-COVID world. She also discussed opportunities for Title I, D Coordinators to support these best practices. This included providing options for evidence-backed programming that prevents some of these common problems, and highlighting which components of facilities must work in order implement any programmatic intervention effectively.
