SJP Wins a Special Education Due Process Case Against the DC Juvenile Justice Agency 12.24.25

In December 2026, SJP attorneys represented our client in a multi-day due process hearing against the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS), DC’s juvenile justice agency responsible for providing education to detained young people. SJP’s attorneys presented a compelling case for our client’s educational needs, citing his clear need for educational supports and related services. A few weeks after the hearing, a favorable decision was reached, clearing the way for essential and long-awaited support for our client.

As a direct result of this advocacy, SJP’s client was found eligible for special education services for the first time. An Individualized Education Program (IEP) has since been developed, ensuring our client receives the specialized instruction and related services required to make meaningful progress after years of falling through the cracks. SJP remains dedicated to holding agencies and schools accountable, ensuring our clients receive the access to the education they are legally entitled to receive.
